2026 Sponsored Membership Drive - Now Accepting Applications!

We are now accepting applications for sponsored memberships!

Apply here for a sponsored IAMSLIC membership.

Sponsored memberships that are available to both new and current/returning members are:

3-year memberships for low- and middle-income countries and
1-year memberships for high-income countries

(Country income level designations can be found on the World Bank's website.)

The deadline to apply is 13 February 2026. The number of memberships awarded will depend on the funds available, so please keep in mind that applying does not guarantee you a sponsored membership.

Applicants will be notified by 23 February 2026.

Member Sponsored Memberships have been invaluable for retaining active IAMSLIC members and for welcoming new members who are unable to join IAMSLIC for monetary reasons. However, these sponsored memberships are only possible through the generosity of current IAMSLIC members, who fund the sponsored memberships through donations.

Last year, for the first time, the number of applicants for a sponsored membership exceeded the amount of funding that was available. We need your help to make this year's membership drive a success!

2025 Executive Board Election - Call for Nominations

IAMSLIC is seeking volunteers and nominations for the following IAMSLIC Executive Board offices: Junior President-Elect and Secretary. These are both excellent professional development and leadership opportunities. The election will take place prior to our annual conference in October.

Our bylaws describe the officer duties and election procedures. Please note that the Junior President-Elect commitment is 3 years total, which includes serving as Senior President-Elect in the 2nd year and as President in the 3rd year. The Secretary commitment is 2 years with an opportunity for re-election.

DUTIES OF OFFICERS (copied from the IAMSLIC Bylaws):

President-Elect-(Senior and Junior). The Senior President-Elect shall assist the President in the performance of the duties of the presidency; and in the event of absence or withdrawal of the President, shall assume all the duties and obligations of the presidency. The Senior President-Elect shall serve as Chair of the Conference Program Committee and shall have overall responsibility for the planning and technical program of the Annual Conference to take place two years after election to office. The Junior President-Elect will assist with maintenance of Executive Board web pages, official documents on the IAMSLIC website, such as annual reports, and conference website, when needed.

President. The President shall be the chief executive officer of the Association, and subject to the Board, shall have general supervision and control over its affairs; shall preside at all meetings of the Association and of the Board; shall recommend to the Board such measures considered desirable to further the objectives and broaden the effectiveness of the Association; shall sign all contracts and other legal documents affecting IAMSLIC as a whole, but excluding those contracts or legal documents which affect only a Regional Group; shall be a member ex officio of all committees; shall represent the Association at meetings of other professional organizations, or, if unable to attend, shall designate a member of the Association to serve as alternative representative; shall, with the Board, approve such reports as may be required; and shall be responsible for other Association business as may be required by these Bylaws or by vote of the Board.

Secretary. The Secretary shall keep a record of all meetings of the Association and of the Board; and shall perform such other duties as the President may assign. The Secretary also shall report the results of annual elections to the membership and file all annual reports on the IAMSLIC website.

a brief description of your professional experience
the position you are interested in (either Junior President-Elect or Secretary)
the reason you are interested in the position.

You may also nominate other IAMSLIC members whom you think would make good candidates for these positions. (We will contact them and invite them to submit a statement of intent.)

Posters will be judged by a panel of jurors based on their innovative content, relevance to the conference topics, graphic design, accompanying abstract, and presentation.

Seeking Membership Committee Chair Volunteer

We are seeking a motivated member to step up as the Membership Committee Chair.

Charge:

To encourage membership in IAMSLIC, particularly in developing countries and underrepresented areas where such membership would enhance and promote access to the rich resources of IAMSLIC’s expertise and library holdings.
Administer the IAMSLIC Sponsored Membership Program (granting up to five three-year sponsored memberships and up to five one-year sponsored memberships per year).
To administer the process and forward names of nominees to elected positions to the membership
Coordinate advice and mentoring of new IAMSLIC members and provide information on networking opportunities.
Forward nominations of IAMSLIC Honorary Members to the Executive Board.

A new chair will be elected by the majority of the board. Please submit your name to Kristen LaBonte by February 1 to be considered.

Kristen has been in this position for four years and am very happy to answer any questions you have. She will also provide mentoring for the new chair.

He/she shall report on the financial condition of the Association at all meetings of the Board and at other times when called upon by the President. The Treasurer shall allocate funds to the Regional Groups based on the February 1^st census prepared by the Membership Database Manager. At the end of each fiscal year (September 30), the Treasurer shall prepare an annual report. At the expiration of the term of office, the Treasurer shall deliver over to his/her successor all books, money, and other property in his/her charge or, in the absence of a successor, shall deliver such properties to the President.

Proposed bylaw amendment

The membership will be voting on a proposed amendment of our bylaws (per Article XIV) in the general election. It was approved by a majority vote of the officers on 14 Sept. 2023.

“A Secretary or Treasurer may run for more than two (2) consecutive terms upon a majority vote of the Executive Board with the incumbent in absentia."

If ratified, this will be added to Article VII, Section 2.

Ballots will be sent to current members on 22 Sept. 2023.

ASFA Magazine, Issue #8 - July 2023 now available!

This issue of the ASFA magazine is focused on the efforts of ASFA regional network in Latin America. There are nine ASFA partners in Latin America and four associates, each of whom contributes to the ASFA partnership by providing records on OpenASFA or participating in one of ASFA’s working groups. ASFA is very thankful to the efforts of Gabi Silvoni (INIDEP) and Silvina Perez Marino (University of Uruguay) for their efforts not only to the ASFA thesaurus and database, but also for acting as ambassadors for ASFA and helping to spread the word of the partnership. This issue of the ASFA Magazine also presents an update from the IAMSLIC conference and abstracts of papers presented by two new associates who recently joined ASFA, Universidad Nacional del Comahue, General Roca, Argentina and Centro de Investigaciones Marinas, Cuba. As ASFA is in the final stages of finalizing its new partnership agreement, we hope to build on the new connections and continue to expand the ASFA partnership in Latin America.

Inspired by the UN IPCC’s core message, the 2023 conference theme is What we do matters: Libraries, climate change, and transformation.

The IAMSLIC Conference committee is delighted to officially announce the 49th Annual Conference of the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC), and the 34^th meeting of the Cyamus regional group. The conference will be hosted virtually by the University of British Columbia Library from Monday Oct 23 to Thursday Oct 26, 2023.

The conference committee is also pleased to announce at this time that the call for proposals is now open!

Every bit of warming matters, every year matters, every choice matters.

Inspired by the UN IPCC’s core message, the IAMSLIC 2023 conference theme is What we do matters: Libraries, climate change, and transformation.

This theme speaks to the roles of libraries and library workers in supporting research and learning; building connections and supporting communities; and undertaking the transformative change that is needed in our communities, our institutions, and ourselves.

We are all connected and the changes we make can have far reaching impacts. To achieve “transformative systemic change” (IPCC), we seek inspired approaches to investigate and imagine new futures, accelerate change, and most importantly, work together. Throughout the conference, we will explore how these core messages relate to libraries and library workers.

In British Columbia, we see this theme of transformative change captured in the salmon, as a biological and culturally significant entity. Salmon transform throughout their life cycles, moving from stream to ocean to stream, and their health is closely tied to all of these places, inseparable from the health of Southern Resident Killer Whales, eagles, rivers, oceans, forests, bears, and human communities who rely on salmon for food, culture, and identity.

In 2022, heat and drought caused by climate change led to streams and rivers drying up and the death of thousands of salmon. Such events are expected to increase as we lose an estimated 95% of our glaciers in our lifetimes, decreasing fresh water levels and increasing water temperatures. While we witness these changes and resulting impacts, there are efforts to prioritize and teach Traditional Indigenous Knowledge, restoration, climate solutions, and climate justice.

Meet the #IAMSLIC2022 presenters - Manuel Hidalgo Oconitrillo

Now let's meet #IAMSLIC2022 keynote presenter, Manuel Hidalgo Oconitrillo. Manuel will be speaking to us on Day 1 of the conference about "SIDALC Alliance: Innovation focused on products and services for the agricultural sector".

Manuel is Costa Rican, a computer engineer, and graduated with a Master's Degree in Computing with an emphasis on Telematics from the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (ITCR). He has 29 years of experience in the area of information systems, with seven years working for the Tropical Agricultural Research and Teaching Center (CATIE), and the last 22 years for the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) as a Specialist in Systems and Information Technologies of the SIDALC Alliance. He has a title granted by the Secretary of Peace of the Government of Guatemala that accredits him as Ambassador of the Culture of Peace. He was a consultant to FAO in Rome, for the office of knowledge exchange, research and extension. He is currently applying for the Master's Degree in Industry 4.0 at the University of La Rioja, Spain.

Next let's meet #IAMSLIC2022 presenter, and IAMSLIC membership database manager and Membership Committee chair (plus former Treasurer), Kristen LaBonte.

Kristen is a Research & Engagement Librarian at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the United States. She is a subject liaison to multiple life and environmental science departments. Kristen earned a Bachelor's Degree in Geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1999 and a Master’s of Library Science in 2004 from Southern Connecticut State University. She then joined the CSU Channel Islands faculty as the Digital Resources and GIS Librarian and in 2011, she returned as a Reference & Instruction Librarian to the UCSB Library.

Kristen will be presenting in person at the conference on "Strategic planning for shifting academic librarian roles: Moving from subject librarianship towards functional, skill-based teams".

Professionally, Kristen is interested in reference librarianship, subject librarianship, and science librarianship. Personally, she is interested in winemaking, organic gardening, community gardens, travel, live music, birdwatching, hiking, bikepacking and backpacking, so you can chat with her about all this and more in person next week!

Meet the #IAMSLIC2022 presenters - Amanda Whitmire

Next up we have presenter, and Cyamus regional representative, Amanda Whitmire.

Amanda describes herself as an oceanographer by training and a librarian by chance. She is Head Librarian at the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University. She earned her BS degree in Aquatic Biology from the University of California Santa Barbara and a PhD in Oceanography from Oregon State University. Amanda loves the variety of the day-to-day duties of running a branch library, but most enjoys working with faculty and students, and curating both the historical and born-digital data collections of the marine station.

At #IAMSLIC2022 Amanda will be presenting on "Collection connections: a library vignette on democratization of aquatic science knowledge". She will be presenting in person.

Professionally, Amanda is interested in collections as data, open knowledge networks, and data curation. At home, Amanda is an avid gardener, crafter, carpenter, and keeper of chickens. So there is lots to chat with her about during the conference!

Meet the #IAMSLIC2022 presenters - Dr. Majbritt Bolton-Warberg

Now let's meet Majbritt Bolton-Warberg, who is the Blue Bioeconomy Programme Manager at Ireland's Marine Institute.

Majbritt has 17 years’ experience in marine research topics, ranging from aquatic toxicology to aquaculture. In her current role as a Programme Manager in the Policy, Innovation and Research Support (PIRS) Service Group, she has responsibility for designing and implementing a national support and coordination function for the blue bioeconomy sector. In addition to this national role, Majbritt has responsibility in a number of international initiatives including the BlueBio ERA-Net Cofund, the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership and a JPI Oceans Joint Action in Blue Carbon.

Next up, let's meet our #IAMSLIC2022 conference presenter Jan Sung, from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Jan came to the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2008, as the Head of Access Services. Previous to that she worked at Eastern Illinois University for six years, as the assistant head of the Circulation Department. Currently she is working as a member of the Science and Technology Reference Department. Jan earned her MLIS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jan's topic for #IAMSLIC2022 is "Voyage from Print to Electronic". Jan's professional areas of interest include statistical analysis and collection development. During her free time she likes to bother her five grandsons on FaceTime, and she enjoys paddling, sailing, singing, and hiking with her husband.

Yuriem is another of our presenters from our host region for #IAMSLIC2022, Grupo Latinoamericano.

Yuriem has worked for 26 years as Chief Librarian at the Center for Marine Research of the University of Havana, Cuba. She has finished all the courses of a master's degree in social development and is currently preparing her master's thesis.

She likes to study and improve herself professionally, but she also enjoys her family and good friends, plus music, dance, cinema, reading and learning about other cultures.

Yuriem will be presenting at #IAMSLIC2022 on "La Revista de Investigaciones Marinas: transformations towards sustainability. What are we thinking for the immediate future?". She will be at the conference in person, so please do connect with her about this, and any of her other interests.

Geoff is the Librarian for Marine Resources at the Marine Resources Library in Charleston, SC, USA. He has been at the library for seven years, and serves both the College of Charleston, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the NOAA/NIST Charleston laboratories. He is a tenured member of the faculty of the College of Charleston. Geoff was formerly Systems Librarian at Mercer University in Macon, GA. He has been a member of IAMSLIC and SAIL for seven years, attending every IAMSLIC and SAIL conference since fall 2019. He currently serves as IAMSLIC Treasurer, interim website manager, and on the IAMSLIC 2022 Conference Planning Committee and the IAMSLIC Resource Sharing Taskforce. (Thank you, Geoff!)

Next up, let's meet our #IAMSLIC2022 conference presenters Julia Demasi Zavala & Elvira Demasi Zavala.

We are thrilled to have Julia speak to us, as she is President of the Asociación de Bibliotecólogos del Uruguay. She is a graduate of the Universidad de la República LIS program, with a dissertation on library history. From 2000 to 2013 she worked in engineering college libraries in Uruguay (Facultad de Ingeniería) and for 18 months in the US (University of Minnesota Walter Library). Since 2013 she works in a K12 school library in Montevideo. For the past 20 years she has also worked free lance as a virtual reference librarian, a knowledge organization specialist, an information literacy tutor, and assisting with moving and selling personal libraries. Julia believes there's strength in numbers so she joined the ABU as soon as she could, and loves organizations where the question is not what they do for you but what you can do thanks to them.

Joining Julia is Elvira, who has the fabulous job title of Tourismologist. Elvira graduated from the University of Costa Rica with a BSc and a MSc in ecotourism, specializing in environmental management and ecotourism. She has participated in numerous consultancies and research projects related to ecotourism, nature tourism and alternative tourism, trying to emphasize strategies to approach the objectives of sustainability. She currently works as a teacher in the Bachelor of Tourism at Universidad de la República and in the Bachelor of Educational Recreation and the Bachelor of Tourism Business Management at Universidad Católica del Uruguay. In addition to teaching, she dedicates part of her time to conducting research that addresses tourism from different perspectives.

Julia and Elvira will be presenting at #IAMSLIC2022 on "Environmental sciences libraries as a force for good in a world of skepticism and disillusion".

As might be obvious from their backgrounds, Julia is interested in library history and information literacy and Elvira is interested in sustainable tourism, territorial processes, and sustainable development. Please do chat to them at the conference about these things, and more!

Meet the #IAMSLIC2022 presenters - Dr. Santiago Caro Ros

Santiago will be introducing us to our host institution DINARA, where he is the Director of Institutional Communication, Library and IT.

Santiago is a veterinarian, oriented towards food technology, with a thirty five-year long career. At present he is in charge of the communication area of the governmental agency for fisheries management. Previously he was a technical adviser of an international organisation, where he was responsible for promotion, relationships, communication, project design, consultancy, conferences addresses, redaction of technical articles, publication editing, personnel supervision and general management. He has experience with the design of quality assurance plans, fishing plants inspection, and sanitary control of internationally traded fishery products.

We look forward to hearing more from Santiago during the conference!

Meet the #IAMSLIC2022 presenters - first up Joyce M. Shaw and Megan Le

Over the next week or so we'll be spotlighting some of our #IAMSLIC2022 conference presenters.

Joyce and Megan are from the University of Southern Mississippi, where Joyce has been Head of Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (Ocean Springs, MS, USA) since December 1995. In 2008 Joyce was invited to join the faculty of University Libraries (The University of Southern Mississippi) as an associate professor, awarded tenure in 2009, and promoted to Professor in 2015. A 26-year member of IAMSLIC, in 2013-2015 she served as the SAIL Representative on the IAMSLIC board. She has served four terms as Chair of the Special Libraries Section of the Mississippi Library Association and is in her second term as chair of Atmospheric Science Librarians International. She is a graduate of Rosary College (now called Dominican University, River Forest, IL, USA) with an MLIS and Roosevelt University (Chicago, IL, USA) with an MA in Urban Studies. In 2022 she received The University of Southern Mississippi Excellence in Librarianship award. Megan is a recent MLIS graduate student of the University of Southern Mississippi, and is starting to train as a reference librarian.

Joyce and Megan will be presenting on "Books for children and young people to increase science information literacy about ocean pollution".

In her spare time Joyce is an active volunteer, with membership in and past president of the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs, an associate member of North Bay Civitan Club, and Co-Zone Captain for the Mississippi Coastal Clean-Up. Professionally, she is interested in scholarly communication, emergency and disaster preparedness, mentoring, and the history of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Personally she is interested in volunteering, and collecting Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and other toy work vehicles, especially concrete mixers. Megan on the other hand has an interest in film studies, so please do talk to either of them about their interests (or anything else) during the conference!

Joint OpenASFA - AquaDocs training programme 29th August to 2nd September

The FAO ASFA Secretariat and AquaDocs (IOC-IODE and IAMSLIC) would like to invite you to a joint training programme on the use of OpenASFA and AquaDocs. The training will run from 29th August - 2nd September and cover the basics of using OpenASFA and AquaDoc, as well as Advanced Cataloguing sessions that will help improve the quality of records on both systems. There will be five training sessions, each to last no longer than 2 hours. You are
welcome to register for all five sessions, or only those most relevant to you- there is no obligation to attend all five courses. Should you wish, a short test will be circulated after each training session and certificates given to any participants who pass.

Each session will be held at 13:00 - 15:00 UTC/ GMT. Sessions will be recorded and can be circulated after each session. If you wish to attend, please register using the links below. It is necessary to register for each training session you wish to attend.

We are pleased to launchAquaDocs, a new joint open access repository of the UNESCO/IOC International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) and the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) with support from the FAO Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts(ASFA).

AquaDocs will benefit research communities and society at large by:

making aquatic and marine science information FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)
offering a repository platform to organizations and individuals without the infrastructure to support their own
providing a capacity development opportunity for the IODE and IAMSLIC communities

AquaDocs has been created by merging content from OceanDocs (IODE) and Aquatic Commons (IAMSLIC), two existing repositories with similar foci and overlapping user communities. By combining efforts to fund and operate one repository, AquaDocs offers a more streamlined and sustainable solution.

The hosted Open Repository software, used by AquaDocs, offers several new features, including a multilingual interface, user export of metadata, sharing of items through social media, usage statistics and Altmetrics, author profile pages, batch uploading of metadata with PDFs, and a metadata quality module.

Many individuals were involved in the development of AquaDocs, notably the Joint Repository Working Group with membership from the Aquatic Commons Board, OceanDocs Steering Group, IODE Project Office, and FAO ASFA Secretariat. WorldFish is responsible for the beautifully designed logo and branding.

Joint SAIL/Cyamus annual conference a huge success!

The joint SAIL/Cyamus two-day annual conference just wrapped up and we had a great time with tons of wonderful presentations. Keynote speaker Kara Gadeken set the tone with her fascinating talk about marine sediments and also about women in science. Presentations ranged from research data management to chatbots to Wikipedia. Kristen Culp from ProQuest/Clarivate gave us an update on recent organizational changes. ASFA Magazine Issue 6 - call for proposals

We would like to invite you to contribute to the next issue of the ASFA Magazine, which is due to be published in July 2021. The theme for the next issue is: Information systems to support aquatic science, fisheries and aquaculture. The attached document provides more detail on how to submit an article, and some ideas for articles are outlined below.

If you are thinking of submitting an article, please let me know as I'm happy to provide any support or guidance. Please feel free to share this call for proposals with anyone who might be interested in writing an article - we hope to receive submissions from as many people as possible!

Ideas for articles on Information Systems to support aquatic sciences:

The role of information systems in supporting the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021-2030, see https://www.oceandecade.org/)or UN Decade of Ecosystem restoration (2021-2030, see https://www.decadeonrestoration.org/). This could be a repository, database or service you use or manage that provides information relevant to either of these two decades.
The role of information systems if providing access to trustworthy and reputable research. In an age where people rely on search engines and social media to access information, what is the role of databases, repositories and other systems in ensuring access to reliable information? Does more need to be done to ensure the public has access to scientific information and knowledge, and how can information systems combat misinformation?
Meeting user needs – you could describe how an information system you use or manage meets specific user needs in the fields of aquatic science, fisheries or aquaculture. This could include use of the ASFA database at your institution.

As SAIL and CYAMUS collaborate to create a useful, timely, and engaging conference, they mirror the members libraries that collaborate with their constituencies to support scientific communication, scholarly engagement, and mission success. Building the bridges within our communities, connecting people and knowledge, and serving as trusted arbitrators, SAIL and CYAMUS libraries are leaders in partnering and supporting each other and our researchers, faculty, students, administrators, and public.

Some potential topics:

• Identifying successful library partnerships.

• After a year of challenges including closures and remote work, what short term responses will become long term changes to services and resources?

• Engagement with users for insight into better delivery of products.

• New developments in collection development.

• The “Big Deal” packages—gone for good or undergoing changes?

• Working with your Office of Research, Foundation, and other partnership opportunities.

• Increasing diversity and inclusion (engagement with users; developing diverse collections, etc.)

Other ideas welcome!

Proposals for 30-minute presentations, 60-minute moderated panel discussions, and 10-minute lightning talks are due by April 16, 2021. Conference registration is required for presenters.

PIRG Regional Group Update - Now APIRG!

There is very exciting news to report from PIRG. In November, PIRG (Pacific Islands Regional Group) became APIRG (Asia & Pacific Islands Regional Group), to reflect the growing number of group members based in Asia. The name change was first discussed at a PIRG meet up during the 2020 IAMSLIC Conference. After that discussion PIRG representative Hannah Russell queried the group for new name suggestions, and then put together a short poll with two questions – a yes or no on a name change, and then a vote between seven names suggested by members. The vote to change PIRG’s name was unanimous, but it was very close between the two frontrunners for the new name, so a second poll was created just between these two. The results were very close again, but APIRG was the slim winner in both votes. Hannah presented the new name to the IAMSLIC Executive Board meeting on 13th November, and the board voted in favour of the new name. Thank you very much to Dorene Naidu who suggested the name, and to everyone that voted (twice!).

Opportunities for IAMSLIC/IODE participation - opportunity to become an Associate Information Unit (AIU) of IODE

This past year has certainly been challenging for everyone. Covid has changed all our lives and will continue to do so, and I know that many libraries have had to make significant changes to our services while facing budget crises and in some cases reduced staff. However, as we have faced these challenges, there have also been opportunities to collaborate more broadly across the world. IAMSLIC/IODE would like to remind everyone of the opportunity to become an Associate Information Unit (AIU) of IODE.

The AIUs were created to give librarians the opportunity to achieve recognition of their work by AIU accreditation January 2021, marks the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. As a part of UNESCO, IODE has been charged with improving the accessibility and interoperability of existing data and information, and to contribute to the development of a global ocean data and information system. As librarians there are numerous ways that our expertise and skills could be useful in these efforts. New opportunities becoming available to librarians include IODE Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) which is now starting, as well as the IODE Ocean InfoHub (OIH). Both of these initiatives should address both data and information, but this can only happen as both data manager and information managers participate.

There are currently five IAMSLIC libraries that have become accredited AIUs. IAMSLIC and IODE would like to encourage more libraries to apply. It is not a difficult process and is not only targeted at larger libraries/information centres. Even if your information unit is not separate but within a Data Centre - and they provide the AIU criteria - they can still apply for AIU accreditation.

Call for Chair of the IAMSLIC Website & Communications Committee

Dear IAMSLIC Members -

The IAMSLIC Executive Board is seeking a volunteer from our membership to serve as the next chair of the Website & Communications Committee. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is tech savvy and would like to become more involved with our organization. IAMSLIC uses the Wild Apricot platform, which is very user friendly (even for first time users) and provides a wonderful collection of support documentation and help pages. The chair would lead the committee for the next two years (2020-2022), with the option to serve a second two year term, and be invited to attend the monthly IAMSLIC Executive Board Meetings in this role. The committee charge is as follows, and is supported by various long standing committee members as well as the chair:

Maintain the open-source content management software (Wild Apricot) for managing the website.
Train IAMSLIC officers, committee chairs and members to maintain content areas of the website as appropriate. Coordinate content management responsibilities with the junior President-Elect.
Assist the Conference Committee with the creation of a sub-site within Wild Apricot to serve as the Annual Conference website.
Assist any Committee or Regional Group that would like to create web pages for the IAMSLIC site that are specific to their activities (e.g. AFRIAMSLIC).
Maintain the IAMSLIC blog and assist members with posting news if necessary.
Coordinate the submission of conference proceedings and presentation files into the WHOAS repository hosted by MBLWHOI Library.
Maintain and monitor the IAMSLIC listserv.
Publish the annual conference proceedings.

Abstract: When searching for information in response to a query, their own library’s online public access catalog (OPAC) and databases remain the most preferred resource for most aquatic science librarians. This preference does not vary regardless of age, gender, educational degree, position or designation, country classification, or type of library. While the Internet acts as a supplement to the library collection, whenever the requested information is not available at the library, librarians prefer Googling instead of looking at other sources. Other than aquatic science-specific open access repositories and databases, some of the librarians have identified Google Scholar, DOAJ, ResearchGate, and Academia, among many others as valuable resources that help them fulfill their clientele’s query.

It's The Final Countdown da-da-da-da!

Only 4 days to go until our first ever virtual conference and we’re very excited in IAMSLIC HQ.

So, you may have noticed that we’re doing things a little differently this year…

Usually before our conferences we like to take some time to introduce our speakers, tell you a little about them as a person, give you some talking points for meeting them at the conference and introduce their talk. Well COVID made sure we had no time to do that in our usual way this year, so we've had a little think outside of the box and we think you're going to like our new idea!

In the spirit of Changing Tack and Adjusting our Sails, we’ve asked our speakers to provide us with a brief video introduction. Let's hope the last eight months of video calls have eased our presenters nerves a little bit in front of the camera. We'll be honest, we just threw this one at them this week, so I'm impressed that we've received two videos already, co-incidentally they happen to be from our first speakers on Tuesday morning, both from Euraslic: Sofija Konjevic and Stephanie Ronan

The planning committee of the 46^th Annual Conference of the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) is excited to invite you to join us for IAMSLIC’s first ever virtual conference 13-14 October 2020. In order to be inclusive of our international membership, this online conference will take place over a 24 hour period, spanning all time zones. The Conference Program Committee will be mindful of the time zones of the presenters and will create a schedule that will work best for each presenter when allocating their allotted time for presenting.

The 2020 conference theme is Changing Tack: Adjusting our Sails to Navigate Uncertain Waters. Changing Tack refers to changing direction, position, or course of action in order to adapt to the conditions of the environment you are presented with. It is all about adjusting what you have in order to continue forward in the right direction during turbulent times. This year has presented us all with new and unparalleled challenges and obstacles to overcome. In order to keep sailing on, we have had to adjust and adapt in new and innovative ways.

Dear IAMSLIC Members,

In an abundance of caution surrounding the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic and in keeping the safety of our membership and organization in mind, the IAMSLIC Executive Board has decided to transition the 2020 in person conference scheduled for 11-15 October 2020 in Wellington, NZ to an online virtual conference. In addition to the concerns for the safety of our membership, at this time there are international travel restrictions in place for New Zealand that will not allow us to facilitate the travel visas and arrangements needed in the coming months. While we know that this is a disappointment that we will not be able to convene and meet in person in Wellington, NZ as planned, the IAMSLIC Executive Board feels that this is the most prudent and responsible decision for our membership.

On behalf of both Hannah Russell (local Wellington, NZ host) and myself (2020 IAMSLIC Conference Program Committee Chair), we appreciate your understanding and support during this time. We hope that we can circle back to New Zealand in the future once international travel is safe and feasible again. In the meantime, please stay tuned for a call for proposals and an invitation to IAMSLIC’s first ever virtual conference!

We are pleased to announce that IAMSLIC has recently migrated all of its membership management functions to a new, more fully-featured platform and will no longer be reliant on the old custom scripts that previously supported the membership database. In addition, nearly all of the IAMSLIC website content has been migrated to the same Wild Apricot system. While you can still connect to the website via the old URL and navigate to the new site, you should consider updating any shortcuts to use the new URL: https://iamslic.wildapricot.org.

Among the advantages for members are the ability to log in and update one's own contact information and the ability to pay membership dues by credit card using the same system. Access to the Members Area will now also be available when one logs in to one's personal account on Wild Apricot; the generic member password will no longer be needed for access to member-only content.

The IAMSLIC Discussion List and other regional lists will continue to reside on their current platforms. The Resource Sharing system will also remain on the old hosting service for the foreseeable future. When a member wishes to submit an interlibrary loan request via the Z Catalog or Union List of Marine and Aquatic Serials, the generic member password will still be necessary for access to the ILL forms.

This transition has been made possible through the efforts of a migration work group that was convened by the Executive Board and has been busily working behind the scenes for the past several months.
