March 9-12, 2000
The Cyamus Regional Group held its Annual Meeting March 9-12, 2000, at the Centro de Investigation Cientifica y de Educacion Superior de Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico. The meeting, hosted by Amelia Chvez Comparn, was the largest Cyamus meeting to date, with 34 attendees. Holding the meeting in Ensenada enabled nine Mexican librarians to participate, part of a continuing Cyamus intiiative to expand IAMSLIC membership and involvement of librarians from Baja California and the western coast of Mexico. With the generous support of a $595 grant from IAMSLIC, an interpreter was able to attend, which greatly enhanced the effectiveness of the program and information sharing.Several key topics were addressed at the Annual Meeting, including: the licensing, acqusitions and support of electronic publications; a needs assessment exercise lead by Susan Berteaux which identified training ideas that were forwarded to the IAMSLIC Training Committee; and resource sharing strategies. The resource sharing discussions led to an agreement that more interlibrary borrowing requests would first be sent to Cyamus members before being requested on the IAMSLIC listserv. A task force was formed to examine alternatives for the transport and delivery of duplicate materials among Cyamus libraries, particularly materials needed by Mexican member libraries. A grant proposal was submitted to IAMSLIC by Melissa Wong on behalf of the task force and was funded for $675 to support a pilot project. Janet Webster, as a member of the IAMSLIC Council of Singers, led a fruitful discussion of the mission and future of IAMSLIC as an organization, as well as ideas for the structure and content of IAMSLIC conferences.
Following the meeting, a set of links to the online catalogs and serials lists of all Cyamus member libraries was added to the Cyamus Web site to facilitate resource sharing.

Meeting, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport, Oregon
March 11-14, 1999
The Cyamus Regional Group held its Annual Meeting March 11-14, 1999, at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Janet Webster hosted a very successful meeting with 25 Cyamus members in attendance. Partial financial assistance from remaining funds granted by IAMSLIC to the Cyamus Regional Group in 1997-98 supported the participation of three of the four members attending from Baja California Sur, Mexico. Dr. Lavern Weber, Director of Hatfield Marine Science Center and incoming president of the National Association of Marine Laboratories (U.S.), joined the group for a discussion and consultation on possible strategies for NAML to facilitate marine education at the elementary and secondary levels. Among the ideas addressed were potential partnerships with other marine education programs and mechanisms for students to direct inquiries about marine topics to a volunteer pool of marine scientists and librarians via the Web. Other topics of discussion at the Meeting included digitization projects; support for services to adjunct and affiliated users; links to special collections and grey literature throughout the region; managing public printing and photocopying; personal bibliographic database management software; and round-robin updates from each member library. Susan Berteaux led a focused discussion session on library and bibliographic instruction in marine science libraries.
