Please check travel advisories for your country. Hotels **UPDATED** The “conference” hotel will now be the Hilton Alexandria Corniche. Unfortunately, the main road near our original hotel choice (Sheraton Montazah) is now under construction and will cause excessive travel delays. There are other hotels of varying prices along the El-Gaish Road near the Hilton. We will make all efforts to pick up everyone at their hotel if it is convenient for the shuttle. Please enter your travel information HERE. If you would like to room with someone you can indicate it on the form. It will allow us to better coordinate local transportation. It is possible that NIOF can arrange transportation to and from the airport. We will let you know before the conference what that arrangement will be. Airports Taxis will take you to and from the airport and are very inexpensive. The drive to the Sheraton Montazah is about 50 minutes. Alexandria also has a public tram and bus system. The cost of transport from Borg Alarb airport to the hotel can average $10-12 US. NIOF is also considering providing transportation from Alexandria to the hotel and from Cairo airport to the hotel. We will update you after receiving your flight information. Getting around town Taxis, Uber & Careem: Taxis are widely available in Alexandria and are a convenient option for direct travel to specific locations. For a more structured fare and a language barrier-free experience, you can opt for ride-hailing services like Uber and Careem, which are operational in Alexandria.Informal Microbuses: While Alexandria has a formal public bus system, informal microbuses are also available. These might be a bit challenging to navigate for travelers unfamiliar with the local routes and system. 12 seater mini vans hurtle up and down the cornice day and night beeping their horns. The route is simple for most, straight on from one end of the strip to the other! Simply hail one as it goes past and hop on when it slows down handing 1LE to the driver or whoever is seated up front to pass on. Once you’ve travelled as far as you would like to go yell ‘Men fadlack bass hena’ meaning ‘Please stop here' and jump off. Tourists rarely travel in this way so it’s often of some curious amusement to the locals.
Weather: The weather in Alexandria for the month of October is good throughout the day and cold at night. The average temperature ranges from 16ºC to 21ºC. Electricity: The electricity in Egypt is 220 V at 50Hz. Check the plug type for Egypt and for your countries of flight connections at Power Plugs & Sockets of the World. Be aware of your devices' ability to handle this voltage and frequency, and determine if you need a transformer too. Money, Payment Options, and Tipping: Here is some guidance about obtaining Egyptian currency (Egyptian Pounds, E£50 is approximately $1USD/€1), using ATMs, and tipping. Language: Some simple phrases to learn in Arabic.
